Improve Content Share-ability

For this installment of linking building strategies, I decided to share with you  a video from SEOmoz  about website content and share-ability.

Why is content important to link building? That’s an easy one. If you have killer titles and have killer content to back up those titles, then your articles will be shared. If its good enough, an author from a high traffic site will notice your site and might add your articles links or web links to their website.  And everybody loves getting those lucky backlinks from those types of sites.

Also, if you have killer titles and content, it makes it easier for your readers and share your work across their network.  Every time your links are shared on different sites and profiles, it leaves a link back to your site. When the search engines see these links from sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, and other sites they consider in their complex super top secret algorithm for determining search ranking.

Yesterday, I was on my favorite SEO site, SEOMoz and I had the chance to watch last week’s Whiteboard Friday session.  Last week’s topic is another set of tips and advice that everyone running a website should take to heart if they are interested in getting more traffic and getting their articles more of a fighting chance at going viral on the social media sites.

For this session, Rand Fishkin explains how we can improve content share-ability on our sites by improving how we create content for our sites and using timing when we post and share our latest articles on the web.

How to Make Your Content More Popular on Social Media Sites

If we keep our content interesting then it can be shared. But in order to get our content shared, we need to follow these tips to make content  easy to share.

  • Content Structure and Formatting
  • Topically Relevant and Timely
  • Plays to sharing and Social Psychologies

The Video

Rand goes into detail about the above three topics for last week’s whiteboard session.

Final Thoughts

After watching the video, I started thinking about future articles and how I can make them more shareable. I know a lot of the articles I work are good enough for search engines and I get a lot of traffic from them, but I am not getting as much traffic from social media sites as I would like. I follow a lot of Rand’s tips but I think I can improve on several points Rand made in his video. Once I improve in those areas, social media traffic rise.

I think the title is the key to getting people to look at our articles. But to keep readers on the site and get them to share your articles, we have to have good content. To break up that good content, we can use killer titles and subtitles, with images that relate to the topic (can be humorous or serious), and videos related to the topic. Once we accomplish those goals and keep them in practice throughout our article creation and marketing process, the traffic from social media sites should pick up.
