{"id":413,"date":"2010-02-11T21:55:08","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T03:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/2010\/02\/11\/google-buzz-has-privacy-flaws\/"},"modified":"2010-02-11T21:55:08","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T03:55:08","slug":"google-buzz-has-privacy-flaws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/2010\/02\/11\/google-buzz-has-privacy-flaws\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Buzz Has Privacy Flaws!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After several hours of playing with Google Buzz and doing research on my previous posts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/2010\/02\/11\/what-is-google-buzz-why-cant-i-access-buzz-on-my-account\/\">What is Google Buzz<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/2010\/02\/11\/add-google-buzz-submit-button\/\">How to Manually Install Google Buzz Submit Buttons<\/a>, I came across several articles stating that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/buzz\">Google Buzz<\/a> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/warning-google-buzz-has-a-huge-privacy-flaw-2010-2\">privacy flaw<\/a>. The flaw is that <b>Google Buzz <\/b>automatically sets you with followers and people to follow. Google told Business Insider that the followers are chosen by how often a contact email is used or how often the user chats with that person using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mail.google.com\/\">Gmail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This feature is great and can help a new user get started but, but by default the people you follow and your followers are made public to anyone who looks at your profile. What this means to you and your contacts is, that before you have the chance to change these settings someone can view your profile and your contacts that you most often email and chat with. By Default this option should be set to private. Hopefully <b>Google<\/b> will see the light and fix this.<\/p>\n<p>If this has you worried, there is a quick and easy fix for this. In your <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In the top right corner look for to links that says something like; username has x followers and username has&#160; x followers. Should say it is only visible to you. <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GoogleBuzzHasPrivacyFlaws_13436\/googlebuzz.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 5px auto 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Google Profile Contacts\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Google Profile Contacts\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GoogleBuzzHasPrivacyFlaws_13436\/googlebuzz_thumb.jpg?resize=170%2C84\" width=\"170\" height=\"84\" \/><\/a> But if it says it public you will need to change that.       <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/profiles\">Gmail Profile<\/a> Account;&#160; <\/li>\n<li>If you need to make a change to these settings, click on the edit profile link off to right of where the About Me, Buzz, and Contact Info links are.&#160; <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GoogleBuzzHasPrivacyFlaws_13436\/googlebuzz2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 5px auto 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Google Profile\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Google Profile\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GoogleBuzzHasPrivacyFlaws_13436\/googlebuzz2_thumb.jpg?resize=596%2C39\" width=\"596\" height=\"39\" \/><\/a> <\/li>\n<li>There will be three columns at the top of the page where you can make changes to your profile. In the third column you will find the option to turn off \u201cDisplay the list of people I&#8217;m following and people following me\u201d.&#160;&#160; <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GoogleBuzzHasPrivacyFlaws_13436\/googlebuzz3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 5px auto 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px\" title=\"Google Profile Editor\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Google Profile Editor\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.evolutionarydesigns.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GoogleBuzzHasPrivacyFlaws_13436\/googlebuzz3_thumb.jpg?resize=588%2C261\" width=\"588\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a> <\/li>\n<li>Uncheck that box. Once you remove the check box, then this should set your contacts to private. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I am not sure if it is totally private or if only those that those of your followers and those that you follow can see your contacts.
