Today, I will show you how to add those textures as patterns to PhotoShop. This tutorial should work for PhotoShop CS3-CS5.

How to Install Patterns in PhotoShop

In order to install new patterns in PhotoShop you need to either create your own patterns or download some patter packs from one of the many great PhotoShop resource sites. Your patterns need to have the .pat extension.

Installing the .pat file in the right folder can be a bit confusing. Below, is where I found the patterns folders in the past on Windows 7 systems.

Once you have downloaded the pack, copy the .pat file into the C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Photoshop\\Presets\\patterns if this doesn’t work try C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Roaming\\Adobe\\Adobe Photoshop CS4\\Presets\\Patterns . Your paths might be different. Such as if you are running an 86 bit Windows 7 systems. It may look like C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Adobe\\Adobe Photoshop CS4\\Presets\\patterns. Or you could load them from another folder if you save your patterns somewhere else for backups.

How to Load New Patterns into PhotoShop

1. To access patterns in Photoshop, select the paint bucket from the toolbar and select pattern from the drop down menu. Normally foreground is selected.

2. Next click on the pattern icon drop down menu and select load patterns from the list of options. The patterns folders should now load. You should find your .pat file and select it. If you do not see the file, then you will have to navigate to where you installed it.

In response to a question I received about adding Patterns to Photoshop, I decided to write a quick beginner tutorial on how to add patterns to PhotoShop and how to use patterns in PhotoShop.
