Hi Tracy,

In my opinion, having unrelated links isn’t all that bad for your site, but it doesn’t help for SEO. Search Engines are looking for relevant links to authority sites.

If you have a bunch of random links on your site or in your articles, your site might be considered a link farm even if that’s not what you were trying to accomplish.

If you want to add a links pages and it isn’t related to your niche but you think they might be helpful for your readers, I would create a separate link page and have the search engines ignore (not crawl) the page

I am fairly new to all of this SEO stuff and I am wondering if there is any reason you wouldn’t want to link out to someone else. – providing they are a real person and not a bot or spammer.

True that , it’s a great tool [and plugin for wordpress] , it allows you to find related blogs and bloggers to your niche easily , and make a network together , maybe even find friends , like me.
